An Exceptional Natural Site
The Ardèche Gorges are often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Europe,” and for good reason. The cliffs, which sometimes reach heights of up to 300 meters, offer impressive panoramic views and a magnificent natural setting. The Ardèche River, which winds its way through these gorges, has carved out a veritable canyon over thousands of years, creating unique and varied landscapes. Among the most famous sites in the Ardèche Gorges, the Pont d'Arc, a 60-meter-high natural arch, is undoubtedly the most iconic. This rock bridge, formed by erosion, is a symbol of the region and attracts thousands of visitors.
In addition to the Pont d'Arc, the gorges are home to a wide variety of geological formations, caves, and cavities. The Chauvet Cave, discovered in 1994, is one of the oldest decorated caves in the world and bears witness to human presence in the region more than 30,000 years ago. Although closed to the public for conservation reasons, a replica of the cave, the Caverne du Pont d'Arc, allows visitors to discover these prehistoric treasures in a setting that faithfully reproduces the original.
