History and Design of the Park
Origins and Objectives
The idea to create Vulcania came from former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, a native of the region. The goal was to design an educational space that would showcase the natural and scientific riches of the Auvergne volcanoes, while contributing to the region's tourism development. After years of planning and construction, the park opened its doors on February 20, 2002.
Architecture and Layout
The park was designed by Austrian architect Hans Hollein, who chose to integrate the buildings into the natural volcanic landscape. Vulcania's architecture is a work of art in itself, with semi-underground structures that blend harmoniously into the environment. The buildings are mainly made of local materials, which reinforces their authenticity and respect for the environment.
