Discover Aveyron with Ushuaïa Villages
Welcome to one of France's largest departments, and the largest in Occitanie: Aveyron is also one of France's most diverse regions, with striking contrasts between the mountainous north and the Mediterranean south.
Everywhere, holidaymakers will be struck by the beauty of the often spectacular landscapes (the Gorges du Tarn...), the richness of the traditions (from aligot to roquefort...), and the incredible historical and modern heritage (Millau Viaduct) of Aveyron.
Just think: with Belcastel, Brousse-le-Château, Conques, Estaing, La Couvertoirade, Najac (photo), Peyre, Saint-Côme d'Olt, Sainte-Eulalie d'Olt and Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, this département has no fewer than 10 villages classified as “France's Most Beautiful Villages” to visit!
In the north, the Aveyron of the mountains
In the northern part of this unique territory, holidaymakers will be immersed between the mountains of the Massif Central and the high plateau of Aubrac. It's here, at the gateway to the Auvergne, in a mountain climate, that you'll find some of Aveyron's best-known treasures.
Famous for its knives and Tome fraîche, the raw cow's milk cheese used to make the famous aligot, the beautiful town of Laguiole is the gateway to the Aubrac region. With its steppe landscapes, renowned cattle breed, ski resorts, lakes and burons (typical shepherd's huts), this regional nature park is a timeless land paradise.
To the west, rivers and cities of gold
A visit to the prefecture of Rodez and its Soulages museum is a must, before following one of the two great rivers that run through the west of the département: the Lot to the north, the Aveyron in the center. You'll be spoilt for choice.
At the western end, the fortress of Najac, perched on a hill, will enchant the vacationer. Around this remarkable site, set off to discover the Aveyron Gorges: a veritable haven of nature, history and culture, with unforgettable natural and heritage points of interest.
To the south, the Causses and Cévennes
A change of scenery, climate, colours and traditions when you reach the sumptuous Millau Viaduct in the south of Aveyron. Here, in this region overlooking the plains of the Hérault, the Mediterranean influence is increasingly present and marked.
From the Larzac plateau to the Grands Causses around Roquefort, famous for its world-famous cheese, keep your senses alert. Numerous footpaths, waterways and guided walks through meadows populated by ewes will enable you to explore these delightful regions.
Take a breath of Aveyron's human warmth, and venture further east into the famous Gorges du Tarn, which along with the Gorges de la Dourbie are very popular with lovers of water and air sports: canoeing, rafting, climbing and paragliding are legion from Millau to Sainte-Énimie in Lozère.
Whether you're a couple, a group of friends or a family, Aveyron is the perfect place for a rejuvenating holiday in Ushuaïa Villages.
