The history of the château
Built in 1513 by Thomas Bohier, François I's inspector general of finances, the Château de Chenonceau was seized by the crown following his inability to pay his debts. It was Henry II who gave it to his favorite, Diane de Poitiers, in 1547. Diane undertook the construction of the bridge over the Cher River and the lush gardens that surround the château.
Upon Henry II's death, his widow Catherine de Medici took over the château and continued the embellishments, notably adding the famous two-story gallery overlooking the bridge. Over the centuries, the château has witnessed numerous court intrigues, illustrating the importance of women in its destiny.
